Programmes

Indigenous-Led Conservation Programs

Our conservation programs are designed and led by pastoralist communities, emphasizing the importance of local leadership in biodiversity protection and sustainable development. • Beisa Oryx Conservation: Protecting the critically endangered Beisa Oryx through community engagement, anti-poaching patrols, and habitat restoration. • Dryland Acacia Forest Restoration: Restoring and protecting critical dryland forests through reforestation and sustainable land management. • Gender Equality and Community Empowerment: Empowering pastoralist women and youth through education, sustainable livelihoods, and leadership opportunities in conservation.

Climate Justice & Social Development

SBOC integrates climate justice into its conservation efforts, ensuring that pastoralist communities benefit from sustainable development and resilience-building initiatives. • Impactful Carbon Programming: Promoting carbon credits through reforestation projects, allowing communities to benefit from carbon markets while combating climate change. • Poverty Alleviation: Providing access to loans and bursaries, with a focus on supporting women and youth in pastoralist communities. Over 56% of bursary beneficiaries are girls, ensuring gender equity in education.

Community Connectivity and Communication

Community-Driven Conservation
Citizen science is central to SBOC’s conservation approach. We empower local communities to actively participate in wildlife monitoring and environmental data collection, ensuring that our conservation strategies are grounded in local knowledge and real-time observations.

Tech-Enabled Conservation
Through partnerships with platforms like Earthranger and Global Forest Watch, our Rangers and Scouts collect data on wildlife populations, forest health, and environmental changes, all of which inform evidence-based decision-making in conservation.

Youth Engagement in Citizen Science
SBOC has engaged over 392 girls in schools across Northern Kenya in our wildlife champion programs. These young conservationists are trained to collect data and advocate for wildlife protection, ensuring that future generations are involved in safeguarding their environment.

Comprehensive Data Collection and Participatory Land Planning

SBOC facilitates data collection and participatory land use planning in collaboration with local communities, government agencies, and conservation partners to ensure the long-term sustainability of conservation areas
