We Keep in Mind
Thematic Areas
We strive to achieve the set goals and objectives as they drive our ambitions
Thematic Areas
1. Community Connectivity, Collaboration, and Communication
SBOC builds strong networks within Indigenous pastoralist communities, promoting conservation through:
• Community Policing and Patrols: Local patrols by rangers and community volunteers to enhance wildlife and habitat protection.
• Social Accountability and Development: Facilitating transparency and accountability within conservation efforts, empowering communities through social initiatives linked to environmental stewardship.
• Collaboration and Partnerships: SBOC maintains partnerships with local authorities, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forest Service-KSF, County Governments and other conservation and resilience building bodies to support coordinated, community-led conservation actions.
2. Conservation of Endangered Species
SBOC addresses poverty and climate vulnerabilities while promoting equitable environmental management:
• Poverty Eradication, Climate Justice, and Early Warning Systems: Empowering communities with climate resilience tools and poverty-reduction strategies, including early warning systems for environmental and climatic hazards.
• Impactful and Inclusive Carbon Programs: Carbon sequestration initiatives designed to benefit Indigenous communities, aligning with global climate goals while generating local economic benefits.
• Conservation Areas Nature based Food Systems & Transformation; developing food systems that embed sustainability from farm to fork, that generate agricultural commodities without deforestation and habitat conversion, and that restore soils and degraded areas back to natural ecosystems or to productivity (relieving pressure for further conversion).
• Pastoralist Women Empowerment Alliance: Specific programs dedicated to empowering pastoralist women through education, economic support, and active involvement in conservation.
2. Conservation of Endangered Species
SBOC leads initiatives focused on critically endangered and endemic species, including:
• Indigenous-Led Monitoring and Management of Beisa Oryx and Other Antelopes: Community-based wildlife monitoring to protect and manage these vulnerable species.
• Conservation Leadership through School Champions and Youth Programs: Engaging local students, youth, and young herders to champion conservation practices, instilling long-term stewardship values.
5. Citizen Science and Conservation Monitoring Systems
SBOC prioritizes data-driven and community-led approaches for effective conservation, including:
• Conservation Monitoring and Management Systems: Implementation of SMART, Earthranger, and Global Forest Watch to monitor wildlife and forests, enabling real-time data collection for decision-making.
• Reforestation and Tree Planting Initiatives: Restoration of dryland acacia forests through tree planting and reforestation programs, contributing to ecosystem recovery and carbon sequestration.
5. Stewardship of Indigenous Pastoralist Recovery and Action Strategies
• As part of its broader advocacy, SBOC stewards a national strategy to support Indigenous pastoralist communities:
• National Indigenous Pastoralist Recovery Action Strategy: Development and promotion of a recovery action plan that addresses pastoralist needs, ecological health, and economic resilience.
6. Climate Justice and Social Development
SBOC addresses poverty and climate vulnerabilities while promoting equitable environmental management:
• Poverty Eradication, Climate Justice, and Early Warning Systems: Empowering communities with climate resilience tools and poverty-reduction strategies, including early warning systems for environmental and climatic hazards.
• Impactful and Inclusive Carbon Programs: Carbon sequestration initiatives designed to benefit Indigenous communities, aligning with global climate goals while generating local economic benefits.
