PROGRAM AREAS

Beisa Oryx Community Policing

This is towards enhanced Community in situ Protection of endangered Beisa Oryx. With the new engagement SBOC in partnership with Community Conservancies, Kenya wildlife Services (KWS) and Kenya Forest Services (KFS) established a group of volunteers dedicated to monitoring and management of Beisa Oryx and drylands forests.

THis Includes:

  1. SBOC 12 Recovery Actions Enforce Rangers; SBOC in collaboration with the local Chiefs twelve volunteers under the Kenya Community policing, dedicated to protection of Beisa Oryx, habitats and humans. In partnership with the Conservancies, they conduct anti-poaching patrols and help in resolution of HWC.
  2. SBOC 12 Community Forest Management Scouts; SBOC in partnership with NGCC and KFS selected 12 Scouts dedicated to monitoring and surveillance of 14 identified drylands forests. They are charged to support in stewardship of SBOC Community forestation program.

SBOC Community Based Networks

SBOC has established and registered 24 Self Help Groups within the Conservancies consisting of 324 Conservation Volunteers. Termed SBOC Ambassadors, they lead in enhancing citizen science wildlife monitoring and
indigenous forestation. They are involved in mobilization of communities in delivery of the recovery actions of endangered Beisa
Oryx and dependent wildlife.

  1. Citizen Science recovery action delivery and Establish indigenous Trees Seedlings Propagation Nursery Bank.
  2. Indigenous Tourism Concession and Sustainable charcoal burning (Carbonization Briquetting).
  3. Women and youth groups Ecosystem enterprises

Resilient Habitat management

Habitat Restoration through SBOC Ambassadors leading annual community forestation actions.
This is through sustainable indigenous trees propagation and planting. With the support of WCN in 2022 the team planted 15,236 trees, adding to the trees planted in the previous years they total 33,673 trees SBOC targets to plant 1,000,000 trees by 2030 in the 14 identified drylands forests of about 43,000 Ha.

Community Conservation

SBOC has made partnership agreement with local community conservancy in line with specific actions and innovation towards enhancing threatened wildlife species and degraded forests and rangelands. SBOC works and supports Rangers and in situ recovery actions in 

  1. Nakuprat-Gotu CCY (SS-Beisa Oryx).
  2. Nasuulu CCY (Beisa Oryx and Grevys’ Zebra).
  3. Leparua CCY (SS-Wild dogs and Beisa Oryx)

Future Program Plans

Program Development and Innovations

SBOC has been conducting participatory needs assessment of Community Conservation, and some of recommended flagship and innovative project that SBOC envisions to expand its portfolio include;

SBOC Ambassadors Eco-Enterprise and Tourism Concession

  1. Rejuvenate SBOC Ambassadors SHG 14 eco-enterprise sites along main highway and within the community conservancies (4 curio shops, 2 traditional dancers’ homes, 3 tourism camps and 5 traditional artifacts shops) currently closed due to resource and current pandemic situation.

  2. Women and youth local bio gas units, Stone crushing business, Conservation communities Information Centre and small youth enterprises)

Community Sanctuary for Endangered Species

SBOC as made a partnership agreement with Isiolo County Government to explore possibility of establishing a community sanctuary between Nasuulu and Nakuprat Community
Conservancies. The proposed area is along Isiolo River, Ariemet to Attan area. The purpose of the sanctuary include;

  1. Conservation breeding, Reintroduction and Sanctuary for species prone to smuggling as part of the illegal wildlife trade.
  2. Community Wildlife Vet Centre-Lab, community wildlife Research Centre and be a Rescue center.
